ICCA 11.14.12

This is a very touching photo for me. My grandfather served in the military and we have his flag hanging in our house. It is sad to see the widow hold the flag and cry. It would not be easy to shoot a funeral. I do like how she is wearing the red jacket and not the traditional black one. It almost seems like there is some happiness that her husband/family member is in a better place. It is not easy loosing somebody and you can see that in her eyes. They are looked washed out in sorrow and the photographer did a good job at capturing it.

ICCA 11.12.12

I am a little confused at this picture. I don't know what it is going on. It looks like fields are getting watered by these giant streams of water shooting up from the ground. Overall I love the colors of the photo, they are nice and vibrant in greens and the browns on the houses are not to dark. It looks interesting to see these random streams in a town.

Walter Astrada

Image 20 in the Myths in Norway portfolio.

Describing:
This portrait of a lady missing an arm was taken in Norway. The photo is very dark which brings out a dramatic effect for the photo. It puts a sad and depressing feeling with the photo. Then combined with her expression you can sense her fear and sadness. Then when you look up at her eyes she still seems very strong and powers through life despite what has been done to her.

Analyzing:
There is a clear focus on her missing arm. That may be why she is positioned the way she is.  But then her face drew us in too. Her face showed her sadness, but yet there is power and strength in her face. It is almost as if she was saying that she is not completely helpless. The lady is wearing a 1-piece bathing suit and seems to be in her 40’s. There is nothing but a plain grey background to draw all the focus to her and nothing else.

Interpreting:
We believe that he is trying to say, “I can be changed by something, but I refused to be reduced by it” with her facial expression. We think he took this photo to show that women abuse is happening everywhere and sometimes it is in extreme cases. He took this angle to show that she had lost her arm completely. This photo just has the women. This allows the person looking at it the photo to only focus on her. He left out others so this would happen. These affect the photo by giving a more dramatic feeling about her arm and her facial expression.

Evaluating:
Overall it is a touching subject for the both us. We both know victims of this.  There are a couple photos out of the Myths in Norway portfolio that we have had a hard time seeing why they are in there. But overall the rest of the photos show how hard it is for them. The specific photo we chose shows that there is people out that can be affected by this abuse, but still have the power to push through and not be reduced by it.
